Certified Medical Assistant (MA)

Occupational Summary:

Medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks under the direct supervision of a physician.

Reports To: Physician

Supervises: None

Qualifications:

  1. Complete a Medical Assistant training program through an accredited/post-secondary school.
  2. Certified through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  1. Prepare patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms and other necessary measurements and recording chief complaint.
  2. Document pain scores as appropriate.
  3. Report condition of patient which may be indicative of change in the patient’s condition to the clinician.
  4. Assist providers with exams and minor in office procedures and acts as chaperon as needed.
  5. Perform a variety of office-based testing and treatments related to patient care under the supervision of a clinician including but not limited to vision, hearing, and lifting tests.
  6. Collect and prepare specimens for laboratory testing including phlebotomy.
  7. Use universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed.
  8. Coordinate and manage patient care including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling of patients for clinic, hospital, and other ancillary medical treatments and tests.
  9. Responsible for communicating test results to patient.
  10. Act as a resource to clinician in order to provide optimal patient care.
  11. May administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
  12. Assist nursing staff and provider in surveillance programs.
  13. Provide clerical support with patient/client notification and documentation.
  14. Perform surveillance programs to include but not limited to complete medical records including labs, authorizations, X-Rays, hospital records, and any previous care pertaining to each patient visit.
  15. Provide complete and accurate information necessary for billing related to the patient
    encounter in a timely fashion.
  16. Maintain a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms and storage areas.
  17. Disinfect equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions following sterilization procedures.
  18. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling of hazardous substances.
  19. Perform basic maintenance of equipment and coordinate needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
  20. Order supplies and stock patient care areas.
  21. Monitor inventory including medications/injectables and immunizations, i.e., expired medications/equipment, recalls and patient tracking.
  22. Develop and maintain effective communication mechanism with all external and internal customers.
  23. Exemplify service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.
  24. Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
